This is a review of the cumulative information placing treatment strategems for third molars on a rational and evidence-based protocol. Concepts relating to pathology, periodontitis, systemic disease and risk-avoidance will be discussed. This information is based on a large series of prospective studies carried out by several of the major teaching centers in the United States. It is summarized in the "White Paper" on third molars published by AAOMS this year.
Lewis Clayman, DMD, MD graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia. He did his residency in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery from Sinai Hospital, Detroit and his residency in Anesthesiology from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, he has an oral surgery practice in Southfield, Michigan and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan. He has held Clinical Assistant Professorships at numerous universities. Dr. Clayman is a researcher, is widely published, and presents nationally and internationally.
Dr. Clayman is on Staff at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Chairman, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Sinai-Grace Hospital, Program Director, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Vice-Chief of Staff, Sinai-Grace Hospital. He is a fellow for the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, the American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Clayman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Maxillofacial Facial Surgery and Past-President of the Detroit Academy of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons. He holds dental and medical licensure and Board Certifications in eight states.
